Working on an editorial assignment right now for an article about left handed individuals (of which I happen to be). It talks a lot of the stigma that goes along with being left handed, and for my illustration I decided it would be interesting to add a religious undertone (since much of the negative reputation is religion-based). These two are the WIP's i have so far. I still havent decided if i want the background to be pure white, or to have something going on. I think i may end up adding more vines in the foreground, and more fading into the back, to give a sense that this person is inevitably trapped within a field of bramble bushes (or something to that effect). Either way, its getting there!

Just found out last night that one of my pieces won the 5000$ "in Memory of Arthur Zankel Award!" I am absolutely speechless guys, really! I was thrilled just having my pieces in the show, but this is beyond exciting! For those who are curious, it was my "Wounded knee" piece here:

I still don't think it's quite sunk in yet. There were so many incredible pieces in that show, i didn't expect to get much more than the amazing opportunity to show my work :) I will say though, without everyones unconditional support i probably would not have improved so much <3

Art-wise, i am working on a couple things now, expect some updates in the next week or two :)

Still alive and kicking, folks! this winter was very busy for me, and I apologize for not updating as much as I should be (considering its my career to draw, right?) anyway, to make up for my long absence, i'm going to through a bunch of WIPS of my most recent picture for the Department show coming up for my school, themed "Wild West".

I must be afflicted with Art ADHD, with the amount of times i change my mind while working on a piece. ill be sure to upload the final in a few days time! also, if anyone has any east-to-fix critiques they'd like to throw out there, i'm all open (easy to fix because im tired of working on this SOB).

This is one of those images that could use just one more element, although i havent decided what that is. oh well! this was done for my photoshop/illustrator class, and the assignment was merely an "environment".

i couldnt start to describe what exactly is going on, but i can assure you that it is a large tree and not a bomb going off.

The combination of wind, rain, and cold, always seem to burn me out faster than usual. there's a nor'easter making its way up through the salem/beverly area, so needless to say i am utterly "under the weather".

Hopefully this weekend will shape up, in the meantime here are some things i have been working on =)

Ohhh senior year, what is happening to me. I'm starting to become less and less confident with the level of original work i'm producing. I don't mean that the technicality of my pieces are poor, but teachers have redundantly repeated "this doesn't look like your own" enough times i'm beginning to question myself. Where exactly am i going with my work? I've always enjoyed experimenting with different mediums, and my style varies greatly depending on the idea i'm conveying. Is this a bad thing? Is it wrong to think differently on each assignment? I see my peers, and understand what my teacher is saying, you all have a distinct way of working, no matter how you choose to work. I can still see that its your art, but not with me it seems. I'm fearful I might never find that comfort zone. Maybe I am too influenced off the amazing work i see everyday, that the honest to goodness voice inside myself has quieted down, and I can no longer hear it. Or maybe I am that one artist who does discard their style like a snake sheds its skin, moving on to the next thing that intrigues me, never really glancing back. Lately I've had the lingering notion that my art has plateau'd, so maybe the right answer is to buckle down, suck it up, and pick something. I certainly can't come up with a conclusion right now, maybe in this case i should just wait it out, see what survives.

I hope this doesn't appear melancholy, it's just a topic that has been recycling through my head all semester, and i felt like i needed to share. The only question i am begging to ask is, how do you separate yourself from your influences and find what is true to you? do you make that conscious decision to draw in a certain fashion, or does it merely manifest itself?

The alligator is done digitally. I may tweak his clothing a bit, it doesnt quite scream fisherman to me just yet. The old woman was done in ink, watercolour, and gouache. I havent painted in a looonnng time so that was a huge challange for me, i think she came out decently enough though.

Really rad update numero uno:

I HAVE A SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH. i dont have a name for him yet, but things like percy, socrates, apollo, pthalo, and napoleon keep finding their way into my head. he absolutely hates the camera, and loves eating apart the very expensive moss ball i bought for him. he also enjoys long walks on the beach and prefers not to have children.

New picture yaaay. look its ink! i adore ink, but it scares the living daylights out of my when i use it. im not sure, but i think i might actually have a problem. ill let you guys know.

Okay this really isnt an update, more like proving to you ink haters out there how cool ink looks when you watch it drop down to the bottom of your paint cup. this makes me with i had a fishtank and better lighting. i'd do it all day.

sound the alarms, im actually updating.

This summer has been very busy for me, i moved to a new home, went to japan, played hostess, traveled to france, recovered from illness, and managed to polish off some small commissions before i made my way back to school. Speaking of school, i've got enough homework to make J.C Leyendecker cry. its hard work, but i'm hoping something of value with come of it, otherwise i fear i will be overworking myself for no reason.

with that said, here are some small upcoming art shots of essentially no value

a WIP of a really simple/unoriginal concept for my digital illustration class. i plan to revisit it more on the computer. Its essentially a very smokey deer. the assignment was the theme "on fire", and he is definitely on fire.

I have this really neat skill that allows me to take extraordinarily simple assignments and derail the concept completely by the time i finish. This particular picture is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when your mind erases said boundary...

Its very quickly done, so i will not say it is my best piece, i only worked on it for a night. i wish i had more time to work on it however, only because i love the idea so much. The assignment by the way, was to do a pastiche of j.j. grandville's work.

I'll upload the second one based off of Aubrey Beardsley's work later on when it is feeneeshed.

Been busy with school lately so it feels like forever since i've posted. Here are some preliminary sketches for my independant final. I'm doing some personal/gallery art/fine art based on the theme "flowers".

I was a wee bit proud of these until it was mentioned they are reminiscent of who else, James Jean. i thought the relations to his/my artwork was over, i guess i'm not out of the water yet. The kicker though is that i stopped looking at his work months ago in hopes that maybe i was just subconsciously picking out his style and creating a hybrid with his and my own inner creativity. What do you guys think? I'd sure like to try to change myself by graduation so i can actually get a job with an "original" style of art. I'd hate to be one of "those" artists who comes off as mimicking someone with an already successful method of drawing. sigh.

WIP for next illustration assignment. i have to finish up on this quickly, since i also need to finish sketches and send them off to a woman for our NEXT project (which involves legit real world context aka: my illustration could be on shirts and tote bags, excitement!)

I finally got to sit down and paint something for once! the whole thing was an adventure, and i learned a lot of things i should (and shouldnt) do. Apologies to those who had to deal with me during the process, i can get pretty crazy sometimes.

heres the final result. The ant isnt as bright as i had originally planned, but all in all it was a success:

so i really havent drawn too much over the last few months, mostly i've been working on a certain comission that has sucked out my will to draw. I wont show it here because, for the time and effort i put into it, the quality is on the rocks.

I've taken a break with that though and started working on my SOI entry for the upcoming student scholarship competition. Im submitting mostly schoolwork, but i wanted to make at least one picture not related to school.

Here's a WIP of what im working on. i think i shall title it "thanksgiving"

Its one of those pieces where i figure out what to add as im moving along, basing it on whatever strange mental high i was on when i scribbled it with pencil in the beginning.

Summers here and....has been for about two weeks now, and here i sit at my computer without a job. (this was not how it was supposed to end up) Im still considering doing art comissions for moeny, but really...i always sell myself short, and i dont think the payoff will be worth it compared to say, a simple retail job, or comforting families of the deceased. Either way, there is nothing on craigslist near where i live (which makes sense because honestly, i live in a bunch of trees with some people), nor any other job site. *sigh*

Anyway, heres some art:
